Morning Review: Created for Baker Furniture owner, elegant Fisk Lake home … –

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Designer Janet Chism says they have stayed true to the design of the Italianate-style home built in 1959 for Hollis Baker Sr., the owner of Baker Furniture Co., which set the 20th Century standard for residential elegance.

During their 12 years of ownership, Chism says they even added some of the features included on the original blueprints by John Volk, the Palm Beach, Fla., architect who designed the home on Fisk Lake in the heart of East Grand Rapids.

“I feel we stayed true to the structure,” says Chism, who added a modern kitchen and updated parts of the four-bedroom house while retaining many of the original features that were showcased in Architectural Digest and House Beautiful magazine when the home was new.

With another restoration project on their agenda, the Chisms have listed their home at 330 Plymouth Road SE for $1.389 million with Realtor Katie Karczewski of Keller Williams Realty.

Upon entering the marble-floored foyer, guests step down from a Solomonic-columned hallway into a light-filled great room whose floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the patio and lawn to Fisk Lake 100 yards away.

Finished in a faux marble, the twisted columns set an elegant atmosphere for the sunny room, which includes a Belgian fireplace and fluted pilasters.
