Mount Pleasant buys more than $1.4 million in furniture for new Town Hall – Charleston Post Courier




MOUNT PLEASANT — As the town’s new government complex nears completion, a Town Council committee has voted to spend more than $1.4 million for new desks, chairs and other furnishings.

The town did save $3,676, however, by eliminating planters from one of the bids.

The largest bid, for brand-name desks, workstations and other furniture from Herman Miller, Knoll and Steelcase, went to Carolina Business Interiors, with a price tag of $940,871.

Most additional, separate bids for chairs, office lounge furniture, shelving and other items went to Alfred Williams & Company. The largest of the bids was for chairs, with a $268,918 price tag.

The town is replacing its municipal complex, which includes several buildings off Houston Northcutt Boulevard, with a single Town Hall on the same property. The building will house town staff, council chambers, a judicial center and the Police Department.

Mount Pleasant’s website lists the total project budget at $45.88 million, but town officials said that’s a mistake, and the actually budget is $33.8 million.

The new Town Hall is expected to be ready for occupancy by June. Then, the town will demolish the existing town buildings nearby, including the current Police Department, town administrative offices, and meeting rooms for City Council and town committees.

The demolition work will clear space for construction of the new town gym, and for creation of a park between Town Hall and Houston Northcutt Boulevard, across from the Village Pointe shopping center.
