Homemakers Furniture is planning a ribbon cutting ceremony for its massive new distribution center in Urbandale.
The ceremony will start at noon on Sept. 23 at 4000 Northwest Urbandale Drive.
The four-year $15 million project created a 120,000-square-foot building that expands Homemakers’ storage for merchandise by 70 percent, the company said. The building covers 5 acres and has shelving that is up to 42-feet high.
Inside the building, Homemakers said is a state-of-the-art furniture conveyor system that is designed to transport furniture and other goods between the company’s two buildings. A skywalk has been built high over the railroad tracks between the buildings.
The 70,000-pound conveyor system has more than 3,200 feet of wood and fabric conveyor belts controlled by computer.
Homemakers Furniture was founded in 1974 by Carl and Ina Merschman. Nebraska Furniture Mart, a Berkshire Hathaway company, acquired the company in 2000 with members of the Merschman family still helping manage the company.
