Pilgrim Furniture Will Stay In Manchester Plaza – Hartford Courant
As big-box retailer At Home prepares to open a store in the Plaza at Burr Corners, Pilgrim Furniture & Mattress City will move to a smaller space in the same plaza.
“Our new space will be a high-end renovation specifically designed to showcase our furniture,” Pilgrim President Mike Albert said Tuesday.
The renovated Pilgrim store is to open in the spring in the space next to Planet Fitness, Albert said. Texas-based At Home recently submitted plans to open its first Connecticut store in the anchor space Pilgrim now occupies. The company has stores in 33 states, including Rhode Island and Massachusetts, according to its website (http://bit.ly/2fW6bU4).
At Home’s building application says light exterior work will be done, including painting and facade changes, along with interior conversion. The company does not need planning and zoning commission approval to move forward, planning and economic development Director Gary Anderson said.
At Home sells furniture and home decor, but Albert said the two businesses will complement each other. At Home’s furniture offerings are limited, while that is Pilgrim’s focus, he said.
“They will bring customers into the plaza that are in the market to make their homes more beautiful,” Albert said.
Pilgrim will move its inventory into its new space while keeping the current store open, and “hopefully, we won’t miss a day,” he said.
The Burr Corners plaza, owned by Winstanley Enterprises, includes 283,127 square feet of retail space on about 26 acres. The center was built in 1965 and renovated in 1990. Pilgrim Furniture announced plans to open a Manchester store in 2009. The company also has stores in Southington, Danbury and Milford.
