Got an old piece of wooden furniture that has seen better days?
An alternative to throwing it out, would be to have Primitive Beginnings restore the piece.
Owned and operated by Missy Paciga and her husband Tom, Primitive Beginnings is located at 261 Main St. in Nicholson, in what was the Old Farmer’s Supply Building.
“The store has been here about two weeks,” explained Missy Paciga. “Although we’ve been working next door since October. We re-purpose furniture – both primitive and country pieces.”
The store also features a lot of primitive and boutique-type flora arrangements in stock, as well as clothing and jewelry.
“We have a little bit of everything,” Paciga said.
Her husband works mostly behind the scenes restoring the furniture, Paciga said. While she also enjoys furniture restoration, Paciga said she also likes working in the store, waiting on customers.
Paciga explained that they’ve been doing restoration for about 20 years.
Initially, she worked in wholesale distribution and designing in Rhode Island.
Paciga said she kept coming across old wooden items that people were getting rid of, and hit upon the idea of restoring them.
What started out as a hobby for the Pacigas evolved into a full-blown profession.
What inspired them to go into business was people coming into the shop and asking if they could purchase some of the restored items, Paciga said.
“We just redo them, and make people want them again,” Paciga said.
She said that her husband restores the furniture in the workshop next door, gluing pieces back together, sanding it down, and restoring it to as near original as possible.
“We give it some new life,” she explained.
After moving to Nicholson, Paciga and her husband set up a shop where they continued to restore old wooden furniture.
“I decided I wanted a store to display and sell the furniture, instead of having it clutter up my house,” she said about what prompted her to establish Primitive Beginnings.
Most of their furniture is American made, she said. A majority of furniture these days is not made of wood, so they offer it to customers at reasonable prices.
“I can get or make anything to furnish your house,” Paciga explained.
Other items featured at Primitive Beginnings include candles, handbags, and braided rugs.
Customers can also bring in wooden furniture for restoration. Paciga said the price varies, depending on what a client wants, and what need to be done to it.
Paciga said they have a site on facebook, and response there, as well as customers coming into the store have been very good so far.
“I’m very excited to set up a new business in Nicholson,” she said.
