Wallingford scuba shop will relocate to former furniture store – Meriden Record-Journal

WALLINGFORD — A longtime local dive shop has plans to move to a larger location on Route 5.

New England Dive, 476 N. Colony Road, plans to move into Wilson Furniture and Upholstery at 1060 S. Colony Road, New England Dive owner Pat Korbin said in an email Friday. The new shop will be larger and may have a warehouse.

Richard and Aura Wilson sold Wilson Furniture and Upholstery to South Colony Realty LLC, which is owned by Korbin, for $390,000.

New England Dive was established in 1987 and was originally located at 196 N. Colony Road before it moved to 476 N. Colony Road in the mid-1990s.

“It’s a hobby that turned into a business that thrived and became a career,” Korbin told the Record-Journal in 1997.

Clifford E. Wilson opened Wilson Furniture and Upholstery, originally known as C.E. Wilson Furniture, in 1938. The store sold and restored furniture over dozens of years and ownership of the store spanned five generations of the Wilson family.

“The business is an example of one of the few family-owned business in town,” Cindy Semrau, vice president of membership services for the Chamber of Commerce told the Record-Journal in 1996. “It offered very personalized service and wasn’t any more expensive than the department stores.”
