Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer charged Friday that Republicans are rushing President Trump‘s Cabinet nominees through the Senate because they are “ashamed” of his picks.

The top Senate Democrat slammed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for trying to rush Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt’s confirmation through Friday, just one day after a judge ordered the release of thousands of emails between Pruitt and the fossil fuel industry, which must be released by Tuesday. Schumer and others have called on Republicans to delay vote until after the emails are released, but Republicans have ignored that demand.

“What is the Republican leadership response? Strap blinders on their members and rush Pruitt through. The absolute height of hypocrisy,” Schumer said. “Why are our Republican colleagues — why do they want to rush through this Cabinet? They’re ashamed of them.”

“They don’t want the light of day,” Schumer added. “Sen. McConnell is ashamed of these Cabinet members, I believe. Many of my Republican colleagues I know are. It is the worst Cabinet, I think, in the history of America — certainly in my lifetime.”

The New York Democrat also referred to the picks as a “swamp Cabinet,” pointing to the vast wealth of many members who were confirmed and are awaiting confirmation, a play on Trump’s campaign pledge to “drain the swamp.” He said Senate Democrats are doing the U.S. a “service” by holding up the nominees.

“What’s happening with Pruitt is a metaphor for the whole Cabinet,” Schumer said. “Disinfectants of sunlight might bring most of these Cabinet members down.”

Schumer told a reporter that he disagreed with Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., over their decision to back Pruitt for the post. The only Republican to announce her opposition to Pruitt is Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.
