President Donald Trumpâs choice for labor secretary, Alexander Acosta, won approval Thursday from the committee considering his confirmation, advancing his nomination to the full Senate.
Acosta was approved in a 12-11 vote along party lines. All Republican senators voted in favor. To be confirmed, Acosta needs support from a majority of the Senate, which is controlled by Republicans.
Winning committee approval raises the possibility that Acosta could be confirmed next week, before Congress breaks for an expected recess. Labor secretary is one of the few posts still vacant in Trumpâs cabinet.
But a busy Senate calendar, including consideration of Supreme Court Justice nominee Neil Gorsuch, could push back a vote on Acosta.
