Today@NCCapitol (March 6): Senate to take first cabinet confirmation vote day before process is put on trial – WRAL.com
Raleigh, N.C. — Members of the state Senate are scheduled to approve Larry Hall’s appointment as secretary of Military and Veterans Affairs during their Monday night session.
Hall got the nod from the Senate’s Commerce Committee last week after a confirmation process mired in a debate between Gov. Roy Cooper and lawmakers over whether the legislature is constitutionally entitled to sign off on cabinet appointments.
The appointment process will be part of a package of laws put to the test before a three-judge panel during a trial scheduled to begin Tuesday.
WRAL.com will carry the 7 p.m. Senate session live online.
Senators are also scheduled to approve a bill that would make District Court and Superior Court judicial elections partisan – with candidates running under party labels – as they were up until the 1990s.
Members of the state House are also scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Bills raising the penalties for boating while drunk and vandalizing emergency vehicles are on the House calendar.
Cooper is scheduled to give a speech to the International Association of Firefighters in Washington, D.C., Monday morning.
