Like an ancient vine, Leary’s Liquor Cabinet has roots in Darien that date back more than 40 years. The family-owned and operated liquor store has a wide variety of reasonably priced alcohol options, with a team of experts on hand to offer assistance and suggestions on food pairings for their extensive merchandise.
Loretto Leary, owner of Leary’s Liquor Cabinet, is a proud supporter of local charities and believes that giving back to their supportive community is how they continue to define their success. Read on to learn more about the vast history of the business, its friendly and knowledgeable staff and how they are making a difference in Darien.
Patch: Tell us about the Leary’s Liquor Cabinet story. Where did it all begin?
Leary: Established by Francis Leary in 1976, Leary’s Liquor Cabinet was half its current size. Kevin Leary joined his father in 1990. With his vast background in the wine and liquor industry, Kevin brought with him a goal to make Leary’s Liquor Cabinet the best wine store in Darien. The father-and-son team worked together until 1998. Kevin Leary took over in December of that same year, and the business grew. Under his ownership, Leary’s Liquor Cabinet doubled in size and increased its inventory to provide customers with the best choices in beers, wines and spirits.
Patch: Leary’s Liquor Cabinet boasts a friendly, knowledgeable staff. Tell us a little more about the Leary’s team.
Leary: Our friendly and knowledgeable staff assists customers in making suitable pairings of wine with food, beer choices and spirits. Fidel Marin Campos and Lefty Garcia are our “go-to” guys and the core of Leary’s Liquor Cabinet.
Fidel Marin Campos has been with Leary’s since 2006. In total, Fidel has over 15 years’ experience in the liquor industry. His vast knowledge of wine has earned him the title of “wine guy” at Leary’s Liquor Cabinet. Due to the rapidly changing nature of the wine industry, new products always catch his eye.

Lefty Garcia has been with Leary’s since 2014. His 10-plus years in the wine and liquor industry earned him a promotion to assistant manager at Leary’s Liquor Cabinet within a year and a half of commencing employment. Lefty’s knowledge of wine is also extensive. His favorites will feature as “Lefty’s Picks” in a monthly Facebook post.
Patch: What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?
Leary: “The only thing you can give away free is exceptional service,” Francis Leary.
Patch: How does Leary’s contribute to its community?
Leary: The Leary family and Leary’s Liquor Cabinet have been proudly supporting local charities since 1976. From local churches, fire departments, breast cancer, to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and many other local events and charities, we are happy to contribute. The community and town have been supportive of Leary’s Liquor Cabinet for the last 40 years, and we believe it is important to give back.
Patch: What are some of Leary’s Liquor Cabinet’s proudest moments?
Leary: In October 2005, the community showed their support for Leary’s Liquor Cabinet, and ironically, it became our saddest and proudest moment. Support came because of a freak flood, which occurred six months after store renovations were fully completed. Seeing the new building devastated by nature was disheartening, to say the least, but our customers and the community at large gave us great heart by volunteering with clean up and returning the store to normal. That is our proudest moment, knowing we are part of such a caring community. That is how we define success and will continue to do so.
Patch: What makes Leary’s Liquor Cabinet unique? How does it distinguish itself from the competition?
Leary: Kevin Leary has been in the wine and liquor industry since 1982, earning him the original title of “wine guy.” His suggestions for wine choices suit each customer’s unique tastes. He has handpicked each item in the store for best product, best price and best choices. Darien is Kevin’s hometown, and he strongly believes in supporting the local community to ensure that it continues to be a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Kevin’s motto is that service to the customer is what makes a business stand out.
Patch: How does Leary’s define success?
Leary: Knowing we are part of such a caring community. That is how we define success and will continue to do so.
Patch: Leary’s Liquor Cabinet celebrated its 40th birthday in 2016. What’s next for the family-owned business?
Leary: Leary’s Liquor Cabinet continues to grow, and its roots grow deeper as well. In 2026 we will celebrate our 50th anniversary. We’ve seen customers who we’ve known since they were born, graduate, get married, have their own families and become grandparents. We’re in it for the long haul, because we love what we do.
