Jamie Lainson, left, turns over expired and unused medication to Lt. Mark Galvan with the Council Bluffs Police Department during Operation Medicine Cabinet at the East Broadway Walgreens on Saturday, Oct. 28. Galvan said the event was part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. “Some people have drugs that can be outdated or not prescribed to them anymore and they can bring them down to us to dispose of them safely and properly,” Galvan said. “It also helps keep narcotics off the street.” The biannual event is a partnership between the police department, Walgreens, the Council Bluffs Recycling Center and volunteers from a number of community organizations. The past events have collected more than 4,946 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter drugs with more than 2,722 residents dropping them off anonymously.
